No Heroes

As one reads through the Bible, one quickly realizes that any human being talked about at any length in that book has seriously character flaws. Abraham was a liar, Moses had a temper and was disobedient to God, Samson was a womanizer, David was an adulterer and a murderer, etc. And these are the heavyweights of the Bible!

I am just finishing a terrific book entitled "God's Generals". This book details the lives of some of the most spiritually-gifted men and women of the early 20th century, names like Aimee Semple MacPherson, Smith Wigglesworth, AA Allen, etc. In much the same way as I found in the Bible, these people, to a person, also had serious character flaws.

I have been following the Lakeland Revival in Lakeland, Florida. The man being used to heal multitudes down there, Todd Bentley, has quite the history, and his theology is far from perfect. But, Jesus is being glorified and praised, and the sick are being healed.

I guess the lesson to learn is this: there isn't, nor has there ever been, any hero but God. He is the only good in any of us. And any attempt to deify a person or put him/her up on a pedastal will meet with quick disappointment. The fact is that our Lord will always use cracked pots to do His work. And thank God that He does because otherwise He'd never be able to use me.
